What to do with old or unfinished watercolors...

If you are like me you have all sorts of old and unfinished drawings, sketches and watercolor studies hanging around that you need to either use in some way or toss in the recycling pile...
I came across these three watercolor sketches the other day from a trip to Maine. They were done quickly and didn't do much for me but I remembered what my friend, Beryl, taught me about using up my old paintings...
Beryl is one of my former students who is now in her 80s but she was doing this 30 years ago...She cut up the parts of the paintings that she liked and made cards for birthdays or thank you notes or even for sending sympathy notes. She also made bookmarks and gift cards and her friends and family have loved them for years.
It only takes a few minutes. I happen to have a small paper cutter but of course you can cut them any way you'd like. I gathered my hole puncher and some ribbon left over from other projects.
I punched holes and added the ribbon....
and in less than 15 minutes I had a nice little supply of gift cards, bookmarks and an all occasion card to put away in my little box of cards and tags.
You can do this with cards you receive too but I like the heaviness of the watercolor paper and people love to get them. If you have too many you can always donate them to a fund raiser somewhere...

Often I end up liking the little bits of the paintings far better than I ever did the larger versions. What do you do with your old paintings and sketches?

What a great idea. One can always use a gift card or book mark to give as a gift.
